The premise was simple, but the stakes were big. Bobby Riggs said no woman could beat him on a tennis court, and Billie Jean King stepped up to the challenge. In the epic battle of 1973, the Battle of the Sexes, the 29-year-old King defeated the 55-year-old Riggs, a tennis player known possibly more for his flamboyance than his game, in three straight sets. Although Riggs had said he would jump off of a bridge in California if he did lose to a woman, he never did. Instead, thanks to the sportsmanship and skill of King, the launch of the womens movement in sports began. This 8x10 photograph has been hand signed by tennis legend Billie Jean King. A Steiner Sports Certificate of Authenticity is included.
